Complte Lies!! Hands Up, Don't Shoot' Movement Built On False Rumors, Columnist Says
NPR's Melissa Block interviews Washington Post opinion writer Jonathan Capehart about his column, " 'Hands Up, Don't Shoot' Was Built On A Lie." Capehart says he regrets the building of a movement on the false rumors that Michael Brown was shot in Ferguson, Mo., while putting up his hands in surrender.

Race Baiting And Ferguson
Race Baiting And Ferguson

The most recent news from Ferguson concerns what Eric Holder has rightly called the “ambush shooting” of two police officers outside the city’s police department. This incident occurred in the wake of two detailed reports released by the Department of Justice. The first report deals in depth with the shooting of Michael Brown by Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson. The report recommended that the case against him be closed. The second DOJ report contained a scathing indictment of the sad state of affairs within the entire criminal justice system of Ferguson. The combined effect of these two reports is likely to make matters worse in Ferguson by combining the back-handed exoneration of Darren Wilson with the unstinting condemnation of the City of Ferguson.

Is Congress Enabling The 'Disabling' Of America?
Sometime next year Social Security’s $150 billion disability-insurance program will become insolvent. Congressional loosening of benefit requirements, and more-importantly allowing people to remain on disability effectively for life once they gain it (less than 1% of the people on disability return to the workforce in any given year) make the problem one that is utterly intractable without major changes. And so Congress' bipartisan Social Security Advisory Board has urged change...like shifting funds to the Social Security disability fund from the Social Security retirement fund.

Yesterday we reported that over the past few weeks, something very disturbing has taken place at the Atlanta Fed Center for Quantitative Economic Research, which keeps a model, called GDPNow, that mimics the methods used by the BEA to estimate real GDP growth.
According to the AtlantaFed, "the GDPNow forecast is constructed by aggregating statistical model forecasts of 13 subcomponents that comprise GDP. Other private forecasters use similar approaches to “nowcast” GDP growth. However, these forecasts are not updated more than once a month or quarter, are not publicly available, or do not have forecasts of the subcomponents of GDP that add “color” to the top-line number. The Atlanta Fed GDPNow model fills these three voids."
In other words, what the AtlantaFed has done is recreate the bean-counting methodology used by the BEA, and all other forecastsers, however instead of using monthly data update cadence, it does so with data in real time.
This is a problem because as we showed yesterday, this most real-time model of GDP estimation, is showing something scary: a 1.2% GDP in Q1 compared to consensus estimates in the mid-2% range, and a tumble of more than 1% to just what this same model predicted Q1 GDP would be one month ago!
