It will be ironic to watchDemocratic Senatorsinvestigate the IRS targeting of conservative political groups after several of them have previously called on the IRS to investigate the tax-exempt status of these same groups in the past.
In the summer of 2012,Democratic Sen. Carl Levin wrote several times to former IRS commissioner Doug Shulman and tax-exempt organizations director Lois Lerner expressing concern that certain “nonprofit organizations were abusing their tax-exempt status and engaging in partisan politics,” the Washington Free Beacon reported.
Levin listed 12 organizations he wanted the IRS to investigate. “Levin’s list contained nine conservative groups, including Club for Growth, Americans for Tax Reform, and Americans for Prosperity,” the article said. “It also included two liberal groups and one centrist group.”
