Connecticut Officer Under Investigation Over This Stunning Facebook Comment to Gun Owner

UPDATE: Police Capt. Geoffrey Morgan confirmed the allegations against Officer Joseph Peterson to TheBlaze. He said the officer has been on extended workers compensation leave since before complaints were made against him for the Facebook post.

“We want the people to know he is off the street,” he said.

Morgan said an internal investigation is underway into the Facebook comments and he doesn’t expect Peterson to be back on duty any time soon — “at a minimum.” However, no disciplinary action has been taken yet against the cop due to the Facebook posts because the investigation has not concluded.

“We pride ourselves on being completely transparent,” Morgan added. “That’s how we do things here.”

NORRIDGEWOCK, Maine (AP) — Police armed with assault rifles descended on a Maine man’s home after members of a tree removal crew he’d told to clear off his property reported that he had a gun.

Turns out the “gun” the tree crew had seen on Michael Smith of Norridgewock was just a life-sized tattoo of a handgun on his stomach.

Smith, who works nights, was asleep when the tree crew contracted by a utility to trim branches near power lines, woke him up at about 10 a.m. Tuesday.

He went outside shirtless and yelled at the workers to leave. When he’s not wearing a shirt, the tattoo looks like a gun tucked into his waistband.

Researchers Find That Twitter Can Locate HIV Outbreaks

Researchers have found that Twitter is a surprisingly useful tool for locating HIV outbreaks. “This study provides the first set of evidence for how real-time social media data might be used for extracting, detecting, and remote monitoring of health-related attitudes and behaviors,” writes the UCLA team. “Results suggest the feasibility of using data from real-time social networking technologies to identify HIV risk-related communications, geographically map the location of those conversations.”

The team mapped over 9,800 tweets with sexual and drug-related themes and found that their locations were a good predictor for established statistics on HIV-prevalence. “Because of the growing amount of social media data, researchers and public health departments will soon be able to build upon these methods to more accurately monitor and detect health behaviors and disease outbreaks.”

There are a few important limitations to the study. For one, both the tweets and the data on HIV prevalence are “reported.” That is, the study may not be good at finding the prevalence of HIV or diseases that no one knows about. Second, the study is limited to the spread of social media. Where an area lacks adoption, researchers will have a blind spot.

This isn’t the first time the Internet has been used to track diseases. Back in 2008, researchers discovered that Google searches were a handy way to track flu outbreaks. Now, cutting-edge researchers are looking at whether social media can also predict violence. Ron Conway’s gun-violence nonprofit held a hackathon to see if law enforcement could identify primers to gang violence on social media and intervene before shots were fired.

While there may be downsides to over-sharing on social media, it appears there are benefits as well.

Screw the Feds

The owner of a California store that sells gun parts to build rifles from scratch is refusing to turn over his customer list to federal officials.

Dimitrios Karras, owner of Ares Armor in Oceanside, told Fox5SanDiego.com that Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives agents are investigating his business because it sells AR-15 lower receivers, which contain the gun’s operating parts.

The company sold thousands of 80 percent receivers in with colors showing where the customer can drill, making it easier and cheaper to build. The ATF said the sales are illegal and demanded the company turn over the products and names of customers who purchased them, according to the report.

“They said either give us these 5,000 names or we are coming in and taking pretty much anything – which is a huge privacy concern and something we are not willing to do,” Karras told the station.
